It took me years to understand exactly how wonderful Hood River. It is an hour’s drive east of Portland, Oregon. For a starter, Hood River is known for its abundant outdoor activities that attract tourist from all over the world.

Since relocating to Portland in 2012, the Columbia River Gorge wind-carved canyon has a special place in my heart.

In addition, the Mount Hood’s year-round snow and wineries in the Hood River region have captured my attention.

But it wasn’t until 2015 that I was able to fully appreciate Hood River’s beauty after making the one-mile journey across Columbia from Oregon into the nearby town of White Salmon in Washington.

From that vantage point, it appears to be some ancient Swiss mountain village, which is vibrant in colors with a tree-covered forest-like area that carved into the side of the river gorge.

It also sets against a backdrop of Mount Hood’s craggy at an 11,240-foot peak. It for sure can take your breath away and offer a getaway to indulge into the historical and heritage part of the village.

With a distance of around an hour by driving from its eponymous top, Hood River isn’t precisely a mountain town for those unfamiliar with the area.

However, due to the wind-tunnel effect, it has developed a reputation as one of the world’s top wind sport locations since the 1980s.
