It took me years to understand exactly how wonderful Hood River. It is an hour’s drive east of Portland, Oregon. For a starter, Hood River is known for its abundant outdoor activities that attract tourist from all over the world.

Since relocating to Portland in 2012, the Columbia River Gorge wind-carved canyon has a special place in my heart.

In addition, the Mount Hood’s year-round snow and wineries in the Hood River region have captured my attention.

But it wasn’t until 2015 that I was able to fully appreciate Hood River’s beauty after making the one-mile journey across Columbia from Oregon into the nearby town of White Salmon in Washington.

From that vantage point, it appears to be some ancient Swiss mountain village, which is vibrant in colors with a tree-covered forest-like area that carved into the side of the river gorge.

It also sets against a backdrop of Mount Hood’s craggy at an 11,240-foot peak. It for sure can take your breath away.

With a distance of around an hour by driving from its eponymous top, Hood River isn’t precisely a mountain town for those unfamiliar with the area.

However, due to the wind-tunnel effect, it has developed a reputation as one of the world’s top wind sport locations since the 1980s.

The Weather For Hood River:

The weather for Hood River is chilly and humid in the summer while snowfall of around 10.0 inches in winter. Drawn into the Columbia River Gorge by warm breeze and desert air from eastern Oregon. This section of the river experiences dramatic whitecaps and Goldilocks conditions.

Due to the optimal weather condition, every summer, the side of the river is dotted with kiteboards in vivid colors. TJ Gulizia, a wind-sports specialist at the local Big Winds business, says, “It’s a special dynamic that doesn’t exist in many other places in the world.”

Windsurfing has been around for forty years in Hood River. Ardent fans worldwide and curious tourists continue to flock here for windy thrills.

By the same token, Hood River’s closeness to downhill skiing area, world-class calming water, scenic treks, and treacherous mountain-biking paths in the valley, Mount Hood Wilderness attracts many tourists.

What Season Is Best To Visit Hood River?

1. Summer Season:

Summer is the best season in Hood River, which makes it the best time to visit Hood River. As already mentioned, the weather for Hood River is humid and chilly during summer, which makes it a good time to enjoy water sport activities and soak the sun.

The daily high temperature during summer ranges between 73°F to 83°F. However, the highest daily temperature is 87°F on August 4, which makes it a perfect time to swim in Hood River and enjoy its abundant water activities.

In summer time, many tourists attend to enjoy paddleboarding along the river and sunbathing while enjoy it breeze. Another things that you should know is that Mountain hood deforests by early August, which makes many backpacking trails and mountain bike paths becomes available to explore.

 

2. Fall Season:

 

The fall season is the prime time in Hood River where there are fewer people, and the temperature is pleasant. You should expect daytime highs in the seventies (70°F) and an overnight low in the forties (40°F).

Many tourists prefer to visit in Fall to hike the Hood River Fruit Loop because the weather for Hood River is more bearable than summer. It is a 35 miles hike that allow you to pass through farms and woodlands.

During fall, it is the peak season for apple arches, so expect to see heirloom types of apples, such as Arkansas Black and Northern Spy.

In addition, it is the time of year when you can enjoy wildlife photography and landscape photography at its best, so make sure to bring your camera with you. 

 

3. Winter Season:

During winter from December to March, Hood River area is a gathering spot for knowledgeable powder hounds, which makes skiing one of the best things to do in Hood River during winter.

Another things to do in Hood River during winter is driving around its scenic drives, which are Highway 26 and Highway 35. The Highway 26 connects Portland to Mount Hood that allow you to see the snow cap of the mountain. On the other hand, highway 35 ascends from the mountain from Hood River.

 

4. Spring Season: 

One of the best things to do in Hood River is that seeing the rain-shadow effect of Mount Hood. As a matter of fact, spring is one of the best time to visit Hood River because even if it is pouring rain outside, you can still see consistent sunshine in Hood River.

Due to the prevailing wind, cool, and condense rain or snow on the mountain side, the Hood River region become dry and warm in spring. The weather of Hood River during spring is similar to fall.

The average temperature range somewhere between 40°F to 70°F, which makes it a perfect time to enjoy the outdoor.

In addition, in March through May, the Hood River experience the peak season of wildflower in the canyon, such as the blooming of Lupine, Paintbrush, and Phlox.

Therefore, the region of Mosier Plateau that passes through the Mosier Pocket Park, the Dalles Mountain Ranch, and Lyle Cherry Orchard Trail put a beautiful display of those wildflowers.

The best time to visit Hood River depends on your preferences and interests. Hood River in Oregon, offers various activities and attractions throughout the year that people from all ages attend to enjoy.

However, the best time to visit hood River will depend on the specific activities that you want to engage in and the desired weather conditions.

The weather of Hood River during Spring and Fall is optimal to enjoy the outdoor, such as hiking, biking, and camping while the weather for Hood River in Winter is optimal for skiing and snowboarding.

In the summer, however, the weather of Hood River is optimal for swimming and soaking the summer sun. Therefore, you will never run off fun things to do in Hood River.
